ANC no letters.jpg ANC Statement, 17 September 2015 Passing of Comrade Reggie Vandeyar The African National Congress mourns the passing this morning of one of its outstanding and humbled members and leader Comrade Reggie Vandeyar at the age of 84. Comrade Reggie as he was fondly known was the member of the Transvaal Indian Congress (TIC), the South African Indian Congress (SAIC), ANC, SACP, UDF and MK. Comrade Reggie became an activist at a tender age which saw him rise in the ranks of the ANC led formations to being in leadership. Comrade Reggie had been at the forefront of many campaigns including the defiance campaign, he was a delegate to the Congress of the People that initiated the Freedom Charter. He worked across communities particularly in African, Coloured and Indian communities together with other veterans like Thomas Nkobi the former Treasurer General of the ANC. He was amongst the first to swell the ranks of Umkhonto we Sizwe after its formation. Comrade Reggie was active in the sabotage campaign of MK with attacks in Johannesburg, Fordsburg and Newtown. He was subsequently imprisoned for ten years and spent most of that period in Robben Island for being a member of MK. In Robben Island he was held together with Comrades Jacob Zuma, Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim, Steve Dlamini and Neville Alexander amongst others. Upon his release he was served with house arrest order for five years and was subsequently subjected to numerous arrests. His resoluteness saw him continuing with clandestine work including the formation of the United Democratic Front. Comrade Reggie distinguished himself as a selfless revolutionary who literally from teenage stages of his life dedicated his entire life to serve his people. In Comrade Reggie we have lost a veteran of note whose legacy inspired many generations who emulated his singular focus to liberate our country. It is befitting to salute him as he is removed from us physically. His legacy must be protected and preserved so that he continues to inspire future revolutionaries who must follow in his footsteps. The ANC thanks his family for having shared with the liberation movement a rare calibre of activist and leaders who remained modest despite his mammoth contributions. We convey our condolences to family and kin for having lost a comrade that is irreplaceable. May his soul rest in peace!
