Teachers won't be administrating ANA - unions

Valeska Abreu, The Citizen, Johannesburg, 21 September 2015

Several teacher unions have this morning announced they will not be
administrating the Annual National Assessments (ANA) this year.

Minister of basic education Angie Motshekga announced last week that the ANA
would commence in December this year.

This morning the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU), National
Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa (NEPTOSA), National
Teachers Union (NATU), Professional Educators Union (PEU) and the SA
Onderwysunie (SAOU) said the ANA in its current form, was not in the best
interest of learners or the provision of equality education.

SADTU general secretary Mugwena Maluleka said the union received the
announcement by the minister with shock and through the media. "This
announcement was despite an earlier commitment by the DBE and the unions
that a task team consisting of all unions and senior DBE officials would
establish a remodeled systemic and diagnostic tool instead of the ANA in its
current form."

The task team will have 90 days to remodel the current ANA.

Maluleka said this was agreed with the DBE but the union distanced itself
from the decision that the ANA would be administrated in February 2016. The
unions denied it had accepted that the ANA would take place in December and
that they agreed to a 90-day postponement of the ANA in an earlier meeting
of teacher unions and senior DBE officials.

"This is a gross misrepresentation of fact by the DBE. We view this attempt
to confuse our members and deliberately drive a wedge between collective
leadership of various unions and their members," said Maluleke.

The unions are of the view that the ANA will not be beneficial to the system
and will not contribute toward the quality of education.
