Police Protest against Cop-Killing

The Morning Star, London, 19 November 2015

South African police began a rolling campaign of protests against the
murders of officers yesterday.

With South African Police Service officers dying in the line of duty on a
weekly basis, police and prison officers' union POPCRU staged a protest
march in Gauteng province.

"An attack on the police is an attack on society," the union said in a
statement.

A national protest is planned for tomorrow and a campaign of lunch-hour
pickets is under way.

Teachers' union SADTU, which like POPCRU is affiliated to the COSATU union
federation, lent its support to the demonstrations, decrying the "media
populism" which calls for a response to violent crime but condemns officers
who have been forced to shoot criminals.

Last week, bail was denied to four police from Krugersdorp, west of
Johannesburg, who have been charged over the killing of an armed robbery
suspect who had shot at them.
