Ecuador:

Correa to Quit When Current Term Ends

The Morning Star, London, 20 November 2015

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa will not seek re-election when his term
ends in 2017, his Pais Alliance party announced on Wednesday.

The party said that it respected Mr Correa's decision and that it would give
a larger role to new political leaders.

The announcement followed days of debate within the party and 16 proposed
constitutional amendments, including one to retain a two-term limit on most
elected positions.

Mr Correa was first elected in 2007 amid Latin America's "pink tide" and is
still extremely popular. Polls in June showed 67 per cent of Ecuadoreans
back him, despite violent opposition protests.

Under his leadership, the poverty rate has fallen sharply, the minimum wage
has more than doubled and the economy has grown steadily.

Access to public healthcare has practically tripled, the number of children
in primary education has almost doubled and more than 10,000 university
scholarships have been awarded - compared to 237 in 1995-2006.
