Vavi's Decision not to Appeal Expulsion 'No Surprise'

A political analyst says former COSATU secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi's
announcement that he would not be appealing the federation's decision to
expel him has not come as a surprise.

Vavi made the announcement during a media briefing in Johannesburg
yesterday.

Vavi highlighted NUMSA's expulsion as one of the reasons why he chose not to
go back to COSATU.

He also pointed to increasing factions within COSATU and the exploitation of
the working class.

Sanusha Naidu says the decision raises some questions about Vavi's future
going forward.

''Is there a better life for him outside of COSATU? The first issue on that,
is that COSATU will remain the same. It hasn't changed and there may not be
his space in the federation anymore. Maybe he may find space outside.

''If indeed there are talks of a rival union emerging, will this be where
Vavi will see himself leaning towards?,'' she said.
