ANC no letters.jpg 3 December 2015 ANC Mourns Passing of Cde Theresa Ramashamole The African National Congress mourns the untimely passing of one of its great daughters and icon of the Vaal Uprisings, Comrade Theresa Ramashamole. Comrade Theresa was a committed freedom fighter who dedicated her youthful years to the liberation of the people of South Africa. From an early age, she identified with the struggle of the people against the imposed Black Local Authorities. This struggle led to Comrade Theresa, together with five other comrades, and her being the only woman, being arrested, convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of the then Deputy Mayor of Sharpeville, Jacob Dlamini. The six, who were to become known as the Sharpeville Six, were imprisoned at a maximum security prison in Pretoria, where they spent four years on Death Row, awaiting the gallows. On 11 July 1988, fifteen hours before their scheduled hangings, they were granted an indefinite stay of execution, as a result of pressure on the apartheid government by the international community which roundly condemned the convictions, characterising them as racist, unjust and vengeful. Their reprieve came in 1991 when negotiations between liberation movements and government led to the release of all political prisoners. The Sharpeville Six were granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Comrade Theresa continued to serve the people of her country as a councillor in a democratic South Africa. Since her release, Comrade Theresa Ramashamole suffered from recurring ill health and eventually succumbed to illness on Thursday, 25th November 2015. The African National Congress sends its condolences to her family, loved ones and comrades. We continue to be inspired by her bravery and strength and the struggle to which she dedicated all her life. We honour her indelible mark in both the struggle for liberation and the reconstruction of our country. She leaves a legacy of selfless service, humility, patriotism and dedication to this country and its people. May her soul rest in peace.
