Syria:

Putin Calls for Broad Front Against Terror

James Tweedie, The Morning Star, London, 4 December 2015

Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a broad front against terrorism
yesterday as British jets bombed Isis-controlled oilfields in Syria.

"We must leave all arguments and disagreements behind and make one powerful
fist, a single anti-terror front, which would work on the basis of
international law under the aegis of the United Nations," Mr Putin said in
his annual state-of-the-nation address.

"That means no shelter to bandits, no double standards, no contacts
whatsoever with any terrorist organisations, no attempts to use them for
some selfish goals, no criminal, bloody business with terrorists."

Mr Putin repeated his condemnation of Turkey's oil dealings with Isis and
its shooting-down of a Russian jet last week.

"Apparently Allah decided to punish the ruling clique in Turkey by taking
their sanity," he jibed.

The Russian leader also blamed the rise of al-Qaida, Isis and their
offshoots on imperialist intervention.

"Some countries in the Middle East and North Africa which used to be stable
and relatively prosperous - Iraq, Libya, Syria - have turned into zones of
chaos and anarchy that pose a threat to entire world," he said.

On Wednesday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Syrian
Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) could be used to seal Turkey's
border with both Syria and Iraq.

Mr Lavrov was speaking with his Serbian counterpart Ivica Dacic in Belgrade
on the eve of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe
(OSCE) summit.

Yesterday Mr Lavrov met privately with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut
Cavusoglu on the fringes of the summit, the first high-level contact between
the two countries since last week's incident.

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said yesterday that talks with
Turkey on a new gas pipeline had been halted.

And Chechen Republic head Ramzan Kadyrov confirmed that Isis had beheaded
his compatriot Magomed Khasayev, an alleged Russian spy, and called for
revenge.

Meanwhile air strikes and rocket artillery fire reportedly hit Turkish
mercenary forces in the north of coastal Latakia province yesterday.

On Wednesday US intelligence sources claimed Russian personnel had been seen
at Shaayrat airbase in Homs province, raising speculation that Moscow is
preparing to expand its air operations.
