Bugging my phone is a declaration of war, says Blade Nzimande

Setumo Stone, City Press, Johannesburg, 6 January 2016

SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande has revealed that his phone has been
bugged by "unknown spies" and has called it "a declaration of war".

He would not disclose how he had discovered that his phone was bugged, only
saying that he knew it "as a fact [and] it is outrageous [because] the SACP
cannot be an enemy of this regime because we brought this regime".

Speaking at the commemoration event of former South African Communist Party
leader Joe Slovo, Nzimande said the incident was an attack on the party.

"Actually I do not understand. I want to be honest [because] I am quite
angered by that. I do not know who is doing it. It is a declaration of war
from whoever is actually doing it," he told media on the sidelines.

Nzimande, also minister of higher education, said he had taken the matter up
with his Cabinet colleague and State Security Minister David Mahlobo, and
demanded that the inspector-general of intelligence, Faith Radebe, also get
involved.

"[Mahlobo] has assured us that there is no such [action] from their side.
Because it is unheard of. How do you bug a Cabinet minister? Even if I was
not Cabinet minister, I am the general secretary of the SACP. I'm not part
of whatever enemy," he said.

He also said that he had a "suspicion" that "some private companies that we
are raising issues with may actually be doing illegal interception of phones
and so on and it is a matter that we will be raising in the alliance".

Earlier Nzimande spoke strongly against the emerging factions in the ANC,
saying that "the biggest threat we face now is the danger of factionalism in
our movement".

He said it was curious that "communists were always the targets" when there
is a succession race.

"There are comrades who have told themselves that they are kingmakers. They
want to determine who is going to be next president and they are doing it in
a highly factionalised manner," said Nzimande.

He said it was "a mistake to think that once you attack the communist party
leaders then the party will die, [just] like those who say today that you
can do without the alliance.

"You cannot do that. That is irresponsible because all you doing is dividing
the progressive forces," he said.
