Nepalis Clear Border Barriers

The Morning Star, London, 6 February 2016

Vital goods began flowing into Nepal at the main border crossing with India
yesterday after frustrated locals cleared barriers set up by Madhesi
nationalists.

The border traffic was the first sign of an easing of the severe shortages
of fuel, medicine and other goods in the Himalayan nation since the blockade
and a general strike in the south started late last year.

Police official Hobindra Bogati said residents and business owners removed
tents and bamboo poles that were blocking the border at Birgunj, about 100
miles south of Kathmandu, allowing several lorries and other vehicles to
cross.

The local businesses and traders had been left without work for months and
had been pleading with the protesters to end their blockade.

Madhesi protesters are demanding a revision of the boundaries of the seven
states defined in Nepal's secular, republican constitution adopted in
September last year so that they do not divide their regions on the southern
plains.

Blockade, violence

Indian border officials have for months blocked goods lorries from crossing
the border, claiming that drivers' lives are at risk from the protesters.
This has caused a dire fuel shortage in Nepal.

The monarchist RRP-N party has also held violent protests demanding that
Nepal be declared a Hindu state.

Nepal's communist government has accused India's Hindu chauvinist BJP
government of waging economic war against its northern neighbour.

More than 50 people have been killed since August in the violence, including
three members of a mob that attacked a communist youth rally.
