Star2.jpg 'No mass exodus from COSATU' Zintle Mahlati, The Star, Johannesburg, 16 March 2016 COSATU president S'dumo Dlamini was confident yesterday that there would be no mass exodus from the organisation to a new labour federation set to be formed on May 1. He told a bargaining council meeting of the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) yesterday that he had been informed by affiliates that they would be staying, despite threats to the contrary in the media. "I am glad that Simon Mofokeng (CEPPWAWU general secretary) put it clearly when he said there was no way CEPPWAWU could leave COSATU, with its rich history within the federation - it can't be influenced to leave. FAWU "We had a successful meeting with FAWU (Food and Allied Workers Union) yesterday, and they assured us that they are not leaving COSATU," said Dlamini. While none of the COSATU rebel unions have officially pulled out of the federation, some of their leaders maintain it is only a matter of time. Dlamini lashed out at what he called "lazy people" who interpreted the union only through media reports, and labelled CEPPWAWU as being at war with itself. He said these people neglected the fact that very few CEPPWAWU members were unhappy with the union. In the news The union has been in the news often, with the Labour Department wanting to place it under administration for not holding mandatory organisational meetings or submitting audited financial statements as legally required. Mofokeng told the meeting that the union had submitted all its financial documents to the department. There has been much jostling behind the scenes over the new federation, which is the brainchild of axed COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and metalworkers' union NUMSA. SAMWU Yesterday, the SA Municipal Workers Union announced that it had removed three of its leaders, including its president Pule Molalenyane, for allegedly scheming to destabilise the union in order to align it with the new federation. The other two expulsions were first deputy president John Dlamini and treasurer Portia Lindi. A statement by the union's central executive committee, which voted on the axing, explained that the leaders had gone against a congress decision to support COSATU.
