Morocco Escalates With Moves to Expel UN Military Mission

The Morning Star, London, 23 March 2016

The United Nations accused Morocco on Monday of trying to expel military
staff from the peacekeeping mission in occupied Western Sahara.

The latest row came days after Rabat ordered 84 UN staff to leave the former
Spanish colony in protest at UN general secretary Ban Ki Moon's referral to
the occupation as such.

Mr Moon made his comment on a visit to the sprawling Tindouf camp for
Sahrawi refugees - and headquarters of the Polisario Front liberation
movement - in neighbouring Algeria.

A spokesman for Mr Ban disclosed that the Minurso mission had received a new
request from Morocco to close its military liaison office in Dakhla in the
coming days.

He said Morocco had acted arbitrarily, needlessly escalating tensions, and
acting against the UN Charter and UN agreement on deploying the mission.

He expressed hope "that Morocco gets the message that this kind of behaviour
cannot be tolerated."
