Morning Star.png Judge Upholds Parole for Hani's Killer The Morning Star, London, 15 April 2016 South African communists condemned a judge's "prejudiced" decision yesterday to rule out an appeal against the granting of parole to assassin Janusz Walus. North Gauteng High Court Judge Nicoline Janse Van Niewenhuisen prompted outrage on March 10 when she granted parole to the killer of South African Communist Party (SACP) general secretary Chris Hani, exactly a month before the 23rd anniversary of his death. Yesterday, the same judge refused Justice Minister Michael Masutha's request, which was supported by the SACP and the Hani family, for permission to appeal against her decision to release the Polish-born far-right assassin. The SACP alleged that the judge had "handled the matter with prejudice," contrasting her negative attitude towards the minister's legal team with the "cordial reception" she gave to Mr Walus's lawyers. Neither Mr Walus nor his accomplice Clive Derby Lewis have revealed who ultimately ordered Mr Hani's murder, which was committed during the sensitive negotiations that led to South Africa's first democratic elections, almost sparking civil war.
