Morning Star.png Parliamentary Elections End in Defeat for Park Supporters The Morning Star, London, 15 April 2016 South Korean President Park Geun Hye's conservative Saenuri party lost Wednesday's parliamentary elections, results showed yesterday. Saenuri had been expected to capitalise on a rise in tensions with North Korea to maintain its majority, but only took 122 seats in the 300-member assembly - one less than the liberal Minjoo party. The People's Party, a leftwards split from Minjoo, won 38 seats. Attacks on workers may fail The result raises the prospect that Ms Park's planned attacks on workers' rights will fail, along with her campaign for re-election next year. Ms Park, the daughter of former dictator Park Chung Hee, has cracked down on democratic dissent while pursuing a policy of confrontation with Pyongyang. In December, Korean Confederation of Trade Unions president Han Sang Gyun was arrested and charged for organising protests against labour deregulation. The social-democratic Unified Progressive Party was banned in 2014 and its leader Lee Jung Hee jailed for 12 years for supporting reunification with the north.
