ANCYL, artists in groundswell support for Motsoeneng

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) and the South African
creative industry have come out strongly in defence of the South African
Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and its chief operating office (COO), Hlaudi
Motsoeneng.

Yesterday, the ANCYL released a statement saying it noted the recent attacks
directed at the SABC as an institution and its leadership.

"These attacks have seen some in our country suggesting that there is
something wrong at the SABC or its leadership thus a need for a probe. In
the view of the ANCYL, these attacks are nothing but acts of cowardice," the
youth league said in a statement.

Also, the South African cultural activists and artists including Don Laka,
Tony Kgoroge, Sizwe Zako, Selaelo Selota, Kunle Ayo, Tshepo Nzimande,
Blondie Makhene, Mandoza, Candy Tsamandebele and Ihashi Elimhlophe, have
pledged their support for Motsoeneng at a press conference at the Garden
Court in Milpark yesterday.

The industry's support comes on the back of the recently introduced 90:10
and 80:20 local quota system on radio and television.

Jazz pianist and music activist Laka said the industry needed to "selfishly
safeguard" the recent gains made by the local creative industry. "We will
take the fight to the street if needs be, because this attack on Hlaudi is
an attack on the South African creative industry," Laka said.

President of the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa
(CIFSA) Kgoroge questioned the way the media reported on the issue.

"Are we using violence as a form of entertainment to entertain our country?
Or are we reporting fairly on what is happening?"

President of the South African Arts and Culture Youth Forum Romeo Ramuada
said the youth would not be intimidated by those who benefited from the
regime that failed to give local artists fair and equitable livelihoods."
