Morning Star.png Court Dissolves Bahraini People's Organisation Al-Wefaq The Morning Star, London, 18 July 2016 A Bahrain court issued an order yesterday for the dissolution of the Al-Wefaq opposition group that led 2011's anti-monarchy protests. The Manama court also ordered that the funds of the pro-democracy bloc, accused by authorities of "harbouring terrorism" among other charges, be seized by the government. The court accused Al-Wefaq of "inciting violence and encouraging demonstrations and sit-ins which could lead to sectarian strife in the country." It said the group, also known as the Islamic National Accord Association, had "criticised the performance of the state authorities - executive, judicial and legislative." Al-Wefaq's lawyers walked out in June in protest at the government's push to accelerate the process, which had initially been set for October 6. Al-Wefaq general secretary Sheikh Ali Salman is serving a nine-year jail term for inciting violence after a court more than doubled his sentence in May.
