New Age2.png Call for Gauteng ANC Election Audit Bonolo Selebano, The New Age, 10 August 2016 The spotlight now falls firmly on the Gauteng ANC leadership in the wake of the party's mauling in the municipal elections. As the party is forced to engage in coalition talks with its EFF rival, various sources who were in attendance at a provincial alliance meeting on Monday told The New Age that the party's provincial leadership must "shoulder the blame" for the electoral "disaster". ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, however, cautioned against the election setback in the province being blamed on the provincial leadership. "This is not the time for us to be petty among ourselves," Mantashe said. Arrogance of the provincial leadership The ANC's poor performance in Gauteng's metros, a source said, was as a result of a lack of a clear strategy and attributed this omission to the "arrogance" of the provincial leadership. "The ANC in Gauteng is paying the price for its arrogance. It was clear from the outset that it did not have a clear strategy to retain the metros or the province," the source said. "Despite this being pointed out well ahead of the elections, it refused to listen. They (the leadership) have been papering over the cracks for a while now," the source said. The provincial leadership's preoccupation with coalition talks with the EFF, rather than a proper analysis of the elections failure "was disconcerting", another source said. Do the right thing, Paul Mashatile "The ANC's provincial leadership once again postponed a thorough engagement. Their focus is more on deal making. Clearly, they have no sense of the seriousness of the situation," the source said. "It is now time for the provincial leadership to take ownership of the defeat at the polls. The right thing is for Comrade Paul (Mashatile) and his comrades to stop passing the buck. They should consider stepping down. This will be the right thing to do." The ANC's national leadership should conduct an audit of the Gauteng ANC's management of the provincial election campaign, the source said. "An audit will prove that the provincial structures was unprepared for the campaign and lacked a concise strategy," the source said. COSATU provincial secretary Dumisani Dakile told The New Age that the alliance meeting on Monday night discussed the option of the ANC not forging coalition pacts to run the country's biggest metros. "We discussed the possibility across all municipalities that we could resolve to go join the benches of the opposition," Dakile said. He said that the option of President Jacob Zuma being axed as a precondition to coalition talks with the EFF was totally out of the question. "It would be unfair to tell the ANC who must lead them," he said. Dakile also said it would be unfair to point fingers at the ANC in Gauteng for the party's performance in the metros. "The leadership collectively from the branches right up to the NEC must take responsibility, not individuals," he said. "However, the degrees of responsibility might differ," he said. SACP: The discussion continues The SA Communist Party said that it met on Sunday and conducted a preliminary analysis on the outcome of the election. "We did an initial analysis and agreed to formulate a detailed position on the current developments," SACP provincial secretary Jacob Mamabolo said. "This will be discussed at a special PEC meeting this Sunday," he said. Attempts to get comment from provincial chairperson Mashatile and provincial spokesperson Nkenke Nkomo yesterday were unsuccessful. ANC provincial media officer Motaletale Modiba said that the ruling party would convene a press briefing today to communicate the ANC's views on the matter to the public. "There will be a press briefing tomorrow," he said. It is also expected that the ANC's national performance in last week's elections will take centre stage at the party's lekgotla starting tomorrow. Its alliance partners, Cosatu, SACP and Sanco, will be in attendance.
