Russian Jets Fly from Iran to Bomb ISIS

The Morning Star, London, 17 August 2016

Russian long-range bombers took off from Iran's Shahid Nojeh air base
yesterday to hit targets in Syria's Deir el-Zour, Aleppo and Idlib
provinces.

Moscow had never previously used the territory of another country in the
Middle East for its operations inside Syria, where it has been supporting
President Bashar al-Assad's forces for nearly a year.

The Russian ministry said that Su-34 and Tu-22M3 bombers had attacked
Islamic State (Isis) and Nusra Front militants in Aleppo, as well as in Deir
el-Zour and Idlib, destroying five major ammunition depots, training camps
and three command posts.

Nusra is al-Qaida's branch in Syria, although the group recently announced a
name change to Levant Conquest Front, claiming to be severing ties with the
global terror network in a bid to evade Russian and US-led air strikes.

Russia and the US have both dismissed the name change as window-dressing.

The Russian announcement follows a statement on Monday by Defence Minister
Sergei Shoigu asserting that Moscow and Washington are edging closer to
agreement on Syria to help defuse the situation in the city of Aleppo.

Mr Shoigu said the agreement would "allow us to find common ground and start
fighting together for bringing peace to that territory," adding that Russian
representatives are "in a very active stage of talks with our American
colleagues."

Russia has previously criticised US reluctance to persuade Syrian opposition
groups it supports to withdraw from areas controlled by Nusra.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Shamkhani said
yesterday that Tehran and Moscow have exchanged "capacity and possibilities"
in the fight against Isis.

"With constructive and extended co-operation between Iran, Russia and Syria
and the resistance front (Hezbollah), the situation has become very tough
for terrorists and the trend will continue until their complete
destruction," he said.

Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov, former commander of the Black Sea fleet and a
State Duma deputy, said yesterday that using facilities in Iran cuts flying
time sharply and is a good way for Russia to cut costs.

He added that sending "Tu-22 flights from Iran means less fuel and a bigger
bomb load."
