Morning Star.png Minister Did Not Intend to pull off Pension Fiddle, Says DPP The Morning Star, London, 1 November 2016 South African prosecutors dropped one of the charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and two former underlings yesterday, a move welcomed by the ANC and communists. Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams said that while Mr Gordhan should not have pensioned off fellow suspect Ivan Pillay before rehiring him at great expense to the taxpayer, the minister did not have the "mens rea" - intent - to offend. But the opposition Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters parties said they would still hold planned protest marches against the investigation tomorrow. Save South Africa campaign leader Lawson Naidoo admitted they had used Mr Gordhan's scheduled court appearance to "mobilise people on that day" for an anti-ANC march. The South African Communist Party (SACP) called off its own separate march in Mr Gordhan's defence. The SACP welcomed the dropping of charges but slammed Mr Abrahams and called for parliament to decide the shortlist for future appointments.
