Save SA march in Tshwane to go ahead

Dennis Cruywagen, The New Age, Johannesburg, 1 November 2016

Despite the decision by the National Prosecuting Authority to withdraw fraud
charges against Finance Minister Minister Pravin Gordhan, tomorrow's march
in the capital goes on.

"Nothing has changed. The march goes on as planned," Lawson Naidoo, a member
of the steering committee of the civil society group Save South Africa,
said.

List is now longer

"Dropping the charges is but one aspect. The march is also against state
capture," he said.

Many South Africans were also indignant about the capture of institutions
such as the National Prosecution Authority and the Hawks, Naidoo said.

Yesterday's decision as announced by NPA head Shaun Abrahams, he said, also
showed what civic pressure could do.

"What we have called is a People's Assembly Against State Capture. We want
the Hawks and National Prosecutions Authority to carry out their duties as
defined by the law and not allow themselves to be used."

Tomorrow's People's Assembly is to be held at the intersection of Francis
Baard and Bosman Streets, which is outside the High Court where Gordhan was
scheduled to have appeared. Church groups, political parties such as the DA,
EFF, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe are due to participate.

Apart from the gathering, Save South Africa will release its declaration and
founding principles.

Flag-waving

"The Save South Africa campaign is calling on all South Africans to unite
behind that great symbol of our nation, the National Flag, to a 'People's
Assembly Against State Capture' in Pretoria tomorrow to make their voices
heard against attempts to loot the country's resources," the NGO said on its
website.

Save South Africa has on its steering committee former finance minister
Trevor Manuel, former health minister Barbara Hogan, as well as
organisations such as Lawyers for Human Rights, Corruption Watch, religious
organisations and the NGO Section 27.
