Zizi! Dlamini!!! Jama!!!

Comrade Blade Nzimande,
General Secretary,
South African Communist Party, Johannesburg.

1 June, 2017

Dear Comrade Blade Nzimande,

A few days ago I listened on television to your important address at the
Central Committee Meeting of COSATU.

In this regard I noted the significant reference you made to what the late
Oliver Tambo had said concerning the absolute need always to tell the truth,
and your insistence that the SACP remains loyal to this directive.

In this context I was moved by your passionate communication of the truths you
conveyed about our struggle and movement, as the SACP sees these.

I must confess that I agreed with much of what you said.

However I decided to write to you to convey to you my concern about elements of
your address with which I disagree.

These are the comments you made concerning the period when I served as
President of the ANC and the Republic.

[Please note that I apologise that the quotations below may not be entirely a
verbatim reproduction of what you said. Nevertheless I am certain that they
accurately capture the essence of what you said.]

During your Address you said something to the effect that the Zuma
Administration has displayed "ambitions for an imperial presidential system".

You then said that "this was one of the reasons why we said uMbeki akahambe
because he wanted to create an imperial presidency."

You said that as the Tripartite Alliance, relating to the Mbeki and Zuma
Administrations, "we are back there...history repeats itself."

"Zonke izinto which happened during the time of Mbeki are happening again."

To illustrate this, you went on to say: "There were e-mails then. There are
e-mails now that appeared yesterday."

You went on to Say that "many of us are now being listened to."

In this context you said:
"There is a rogue intelligence unit that operates outside the law which is
listening to other comrades...the very same thing esasiyilwel' uMbeki is
happening today".

What I have said about "my concern about elements of your Address with which I
disagree" relates to the matters in your address I have detailed.

More representative of your views in this regard is the bold statement you made
that "Zonke izinto which happened during the time of Mbeki are happening again."

I am very interested that you substantiate this startling and extraordinary
statement.

With regard to the details you mentioned in this regard, I would be obliged to
you if you:

* detailed how my alleged "imperial presidential system" manifested
itself;

* detailed how the then 'hoax e-mails' compare with the recent alleged
'Gupta' e-mails;

* detailed evidence of the existence and operations of a 'rogue
intelligence unit' which operated during the period of my Administration; and,

* detailed these other many things (zonke izjnto) which happened during
our administration which are now happening under the Zuma Administration.

More specifically, it would be very good if you also detailed facts to
substantiate the grave allegation that "the serious illegalities or
misdemeanours which occurred during the time of Mbeki are happening again
during the time of Zuma".

All the valuable information you would provide would help critically to explain
the historic and historical significance of what happened during the period
leading up to, during, and after the 2007 ANC National Conference, thus to make
a more politically accurate and scientific assessment of the challenges which
faced the national democratic movement then as well as now.

This would help critically to explain what our revolutionary democratic
movement must do correctly to address the important challenges you posed in
your Address at the 2017 COSATU CC meeting.

I am certain that you will therefore understand the importance of your honest
and frank response to the request I am making to you, as indicated above.

I am making my appeal to you in this regard moved by the very correct
observation you made during your Address at the COSATU CC that as
revolutionaries we must live up to the Oliver Tambo injunction that - we must
tell the truth, even if it coincides with what the enemy says.

Amandla! Matla!

Regards,
Thabo Mbeki
