SACP BG Molewa District Statement, 24 September 2017 Impala Plan to Retrench 2500 South African Communist Party in BG Molewa District is alarmed by the news that Impala Platinum has submitted a 189 notice detailing its intentions to retrench 2500 workers. This matter cannot be left at the hands of the workers and employers at a shop floor it has now reached a crisis situation, the reality is that the mining sector is guilty of focusing on Profit Maximisation and Increased Mechanisation, without paying serious attention to job security and the re-skilling of the workers that are losing their jobs. These ongoing retrenchments re-affirm our stance as we say "Capitalism is cruel, it has no mercy, is greedy and what it only cares about is profit" now 2500 workers are to be dumped into the unemployment scrap. These retrenchments will have negative impact in our mining communities while all that matters to them is shareholder returns, South African Communist Party BG Molewa District send a strong message to not Impala alone but mining companies in the Bojanala Mining Belt to stop its intentions of retrenching but rather come up with a solution to that safe employment of mothers and fathers who look after their families. Our country indeed is in a crisis with itself we therefore can't afford any other crisis in this instance. SACP BG Molewa as the vanguard of the working class is busy studying a pattern like planned by these mining companies to make workers' pay for things they have not created. It was Bafokeng Rasimone Mine, one of the mines owned by the richest Bafokeng Nation which retrenched workers and no one came in defence of the poor workers not even the tribal council itself. Now the Maseve Mine is also said to have retrenched workers citing 'investment optimisation' while workers are being retrenched. No amount of romanticised words intended at justifying retrenchment will bring bread on the table of the poor workers. We will be meeting with relevant COSATU Unions in particular the NUM to come up with a well thought revolutionary action program. This revolutionary program of action will include community members and tribal authorities. We also like to warn upfront Sun City that SACP and COSATU will be coming strong on you. Informed by our 8th District Congress Resolutions we then reaffirm our call for Platinum Chrome and other key minerals in our District to be Nationalised this will ensure that there is beneficiation from these minerals by mining communities and the workers at large. We also call on government to take licenses of every mining company that plans to retrench workers stating loss of profit as a reason; workers can't always leave in fear of losing jobs because their employer is only interested in making profit and not upgrading the well-being of workers. We will protest for the implementation to stop these planned retrenchments by Impala and its sister mines. We also call on all members of the community and labour unions to unite and make sure that these planned retrenchments don't take place. All workers and community members unite!
