26 September 2017 SADTU to hold its National General Council The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU), the biggest Union in the education sector, boasting of 250 000 members, will hold its National General Council (NGC) from Wednesday, 4 until 7 October, 2017 at SADTU Village in Glen Marais, Kempton Park, Gauteng. The NGC meets at least once in five years to ratify the decisions of the National Executive Committee and to adopt policy issues of major importance in between National Congresses. More than 156 delegates, from all nine provinces, are expected to attend the NGC. They are made up of National Office Bearers, Provincial Secretaries, Provincial Chairpersons, Regional Chairpersons and one additional regional delegate per 5000 paid-up members. 120 national and international guests will also be attending the Council. The first day of the NGC (4 October) is an open session to be addressed by the leadership of the Tripartite Alliance and key stakeholders in the education sector. These will include among others, COSATU General Secretary Cde Bheki Ntshalintshali, SACP General Secretary and Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande, and the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga. The honourable Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will address and officially open SADTU's newly built headquarters on the second day (5 October 2017). The day will also be used to celebrate World Teachers' Day, which this year is being celebrated under the theme, Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers. Panel discussions on privatisation in education, teacher professional development, curriculum development, improvement of conditions of service of education employees and on the student chapter of the union, will take place on 6 October in the morning. After the panel discussions, the Council will be closed as the delegates participate in commissions to deliberate on Education, Socio Economic, International and Political matters. This day will also mark the 27th anniversary of the Union. The Declaration of the NGC will be presented and adopted on the fourth and final day (7 October). The day will be open to the media.
