Ramaphosa is losing ground in hotly contested succession race - insider

"You need at least 2 500 delegates to vote for you. Comrades must get off their
horses and start working, otherwise this Cyril thing is a pipe dream," said an
ANC member.

The ANC member said Gauteng was never a strong province in the ANC and all its
previous positions of a "third way" always failed, while the Eastern Cape was
presently divided. "It's a very tight race, but for me I am afraid unless
Ramaphosa jacks up his campaign, anything could happen in December. -

Update on the Heher Commission on higher education fees

On 14 January 2016 President Jacob Zuma established a Commission of Inquiry to
investigate the feasibility of making higher education and training fee-free in
South Africa. The President received the final report from the Commission on 30
August 2017.

Presidency Rejects Allegations

The Presidency rejects the allegations contained in media reports today, 29
October 2017, claiming wrongdoing by President Jacob Zuma in relation to some
undeclared funds.

President Zuma has declared to the relevant authorities all income received and
allegations contained in the reports are misleading and are clearly part of the
ongoing smear campaigns. The tax matters of the President are in order. The
President has also not received any information related to taxes linked to the
Nkandla upgrades as alleged by the media. - https://tinyurl.com/y8dhthn4

COSATU accepts 'inevitable'

COSATU has given up its fight on making President Jacob Zuma step down before
the year is out, says spokesperson Sizwe Pamla. "It was linked to our support
for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa," Pamla said. The ANC's alliance partner
had now resigned itself to the possibility of Zuma completing his ANC term of
office until the end of the year, according to Pamla.

"We have reflected on this. Ramaphosa should not find himself winning a
contested conference," Pamla said. - https://tinyurl.com/yakqwos3

Spain Rallies Against Independence Vote

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets yesterday to demand that
Catalonia remain a part of Spain, rejecting Friday's independence declaration.
On Saturday Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government in Madrid dismissed the
Catalan government and called a snap regional election for December 21.

On Saturday Spanish United Left (IU) federal co-ordinator Alberto Garzon called
for a "constitutional process to formulate a federal constitution". He said:
"In the IU we don't defend independence, but a republican and federal model of
the state." - https://tinyurl.com/y77e29pf

A Revolutionary Voice for Women's Freedom Available in English for the First
Time

The Woman Worker by Nadezhda Krupskaya. is a treasure that has never before
appeared in English. It addresses the reality of women workers' lives, as
members of the working class, and the nature of the struggle of workers against
the bourgeoisie in which women and men must be involved together.

Krupskaya asserts that the condition in which women labour under capitalism is
rooted not in gender but in class. Krupskaya argues that the freedom of women
can never be achieved under the capitalist order. -

Guyana's Socialists to Mount Campaign Against 'Vote-Rigging'

The socialist People's Progressive Party (PPP) is mounting an international
campaign against Guyana President David Granger's choice of new electoral
commission chairman. The PPP said Mr Granger had "abandoned" the 1992
Carter-Price formula for appointment of the electoral commission chair.

The claim that the PPP was a party for Indians was used in a CIA-backed
destabilisation campaign ahead of independence from Britain in 1966 that saw
PPP founder Cheddi Jagan lose out to the People's National Congress under
Forbes Burnham in the 1964 election. - https://tinyurl.com/y7jtr6qt

US coalition occupied, not liberated Raqqa from ISIS - Damascus

The US-led coalition has cruelly destroyed civilian infrastructure and has
occupied the city of Raqqa it captured from ISIS, Syria's Foreign Ministry has
said, accusing the "illegitimate alliance" of misleading the international
community about its true intentions.

"Syria considers the claims of the United States and its so-called alliance
about the liberation of Raqqa city from ISIS to be lies aiming to divert
international public opinion from the crimes committed by this alliance in
Raqqa province," an official source in Syrian Foreign Ministry said. -

Uganda, South Africa Call for Economic Liberation of Africa

South Africa and Uganda have called for economic liberation of the continent
following official tributes honouring African freedom fighters. "Someone is
stealing from the African countries because the dominant forces, economic
forces, in South Africa that kept Black people enslaved are still there," said
Kahinda Otaffire, Uganda's Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

In related news, Tanzania announced plans to nationalize diamonds valued at
US$29.5 million belonging to a mine majority-owned by London-listed Petra
Diamonds. The corporation is accused of under-declaring its mineral exports. -
