SATAWU Distances Itself from 2nd November Illegal Strike South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union (SATAWU) distances itself from a voice note that has been widely circulated on social media stating that an industry-wide security strike is planned for Thursday, 2 November. The voice clip suggests that security guards across the country will disrupt operations at airports, railways and shopping malls. The recording also threatens security officers who opt not to support the strike with deadly violence and also says foreign nationals will be attacked. SATAWU is a legitimate trade union and therefore will never associate itself with illegal and violent acts akin to those described in the voice note. We condemn in the strongest sense the criminal acts and xenophobic sentiments promoted by the voice note. SATAWU wants to state categorically that we do not know the origins of the voice note and we do not support its sentiments. We warn our members not to involve themselves in criminal activities or they will find themselves on the wrong side of the law without representation.
