What I was imagining was a way that everyone could enter geo data so that del.icio.us could be used to help explore an area. I would like to be able to pull up http://del.icio.us/tag/boston+restaurants+geotagged and get results that could be sent to a Google map. If the extended field were used, I don't think many people would adopt the convention.
I know there are sites out there like http://beta.plazes.com that do something like this, but I'd like to minimize the number of places I bookmark a site. If people start bookmarking all sites with physical locations (restaurants, book stores, record stores, etc) at other sites instead of del.icio.us, then del.icio.us has a less rich pool of data. In response to Anselm's comments, I think geodata is different than other metadata because it isn't condusive to normal tagging. I can easily narrow the search http://del.icio.us/tag/book by searching http://del.icio.us/tag/book+linux, but I can't easily narrow the search http://del.icio.us/tag/newyork+restaurants to something like http://del.icio.us/tag/newyork+restaurants+"everything within a mile of Times Square". Geotagging data would allow a method of doing that. I suppose del.icio.us may not be the right place for this. Just dreaming is all...
