This is an issue with running GTK2 apps under KDE when not in extremely high colour mode. Affects me on my Sony Vaio under Debian also.
The problem lies in your card in that you're not using either the proper drivers or a high colour mode - its likely you're using openfirmware framebuffer in 256 colour mode. I don't have a suitable machine to get an XF86Config file from, but I'm sure someone here does. You'll be able to get faster and clearer picture with a proper setup.
