Indeed, that is because the IBM Java release lacks the java plugin that is 
used by all the browsers you named.

The blackdown port of Java does contain such a plugin for Mozilla compatible 
browsers, but their last PPC version was 1.3.x.

Most sites for which I require java require a more recent java system to work. 
So on PPC, I'm also stuck for now...
