Re: HD replacement, this article reports that it is easy. They replaced the HD with a 320 GB one with no trouble at all. In fact they say that the PS3 is "one of the most takeapart-ready consoles we've ever seen..."

I can't see where you find this info there...
Anyway hard disks had allready been changed for some tests.
You can put in this any SATA 2.5 disk, but... 7200rpm are completly useless, the only way to get more speed (just a little) is puting a disk with at least 8Mo of cache. The only thing that gives 7200rpm is hotness and of course this is not a good point.
