I don't know anything about Ubuntu, but Debian 3.1r3 "Sarge" still supports OldWorld according to the install manual: <http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual> Based on the difficulties I've seen in getting anything more recent than YDL 4.0.1 running on OldWorld, I'd really recommend Debian 3.1r3 for these older machines.
