I don't know anything about Ubuntu, but Debian 3.1r3 "Sarge" still supports 
OldWorld according to the install manual:

Based on the difficulties I've seen in getting anything more recent than YDL 
4.0.1 running on OldWorld, I'd really recommend Debian 3.1r3 for these older 
machines.  This is the latest version of Debian, and in fact you should be 
able to install even the bleeding-edge "testing" version of 3.1r3:
