Sounds remarkably like the first signs of hard drive failure, at least that's how mine died a few years back. Back up what you can and hope it's something innocuous would be my advice!

The search took a while and I had the Spinning Beachball o'Death for some minutes. Now, I hear this little scratch sound when I boot. I hope this isn't the beginnings of drive issues.
