Hi all,
As you have probably noticed, the level of spamming on the forum is - whilst
not awful - becoming annoying.
Danny (Jofele) mentioned a spam which he spotted this afternoon and suggested
we set up the forum so new members would need to be approved before posting.
I have checked what options are available - and it boils down to a choice
between -

a Email approval - the sort of thing where an automatic mail is sent to the
email address given by the new member who must respond before permission is
given to post

and

b Admin approval for the new member.

Both have their disadvantages -

For the email approval, I am not sure if the board will actually do that or
not - it should, but whether this feature was enabled, I am not sure. I can
test it if we decide on that option.

For the Admin approval, it would mean extra work for the admins of the board.
Not simply a case of permitting them, but to check the IP isn't a known
spammer or open proxy etc.

I would probably go with the email setup if it will work - and am happy to
test it out if we can agree.

Of course, we can continue as we are. The level of spam is not dreadful,
around 2 or 3 some days - less others. However, a number of "dodgy" accounts
have been setup over the last few months - many I have deleted as they were
known spammer IPs, even though they had not actually posted.

Anyway - comments welcomed. If I don't get any negative feedback I shall look
into implementing email verification soon.

Cheers,
Mark
