Well, as you know, I set up the email verification on the forum and it is
actually proving quite useful. In the last 5 days or so, only a couple of
spams have actually appeared on the forum.
From an admin point of view, this verification is actually quite useful - I
can see people who have signed up to the forum and are "awaiting
verification" - and most are simply spammers using forged addresses, so they
don't get the email asking them to click the link :)

A quick general overview -

16 people listed as attempting to register ( I have removed a few more - so
probably around 20).
Of those, 1 genuine member only.
12 listed as Validating ( spammers)
and a couple of spammers who managed to validate their throwaway email
addresses.
One advantage of this system is that I can check IPs - and help build up a
list of obvious spammer IPs (and add to my collection of dodgy proxy
addresses for blocking too!).
The number of attempted registrations is artificially reduced by other
techniques I employ to remove attempts to register by known spammers long
before they register.

So overall, it is working fairly well. Not perfect - but I don't think it is
possible to block every single idiot.
