Whether in KDE, Gnome or XFCE, a mail client should be installed by default imho. I would suggest kmail for kde, Evolution for Gnome and probably the same for XFCE - or maybe just install Thunderbird for the whole lot - with the WM standard client being clearly available for those (like myself) who prefer to use the default client (in my case kmail). Thunderbird works regardless of the WM - rather like Firefox does, so is possibly the best option if we are short on cd space.
