It protects the branch from being force-pushed to, which is always a good protection to have.
There are many other protections one can enable too [1], but most of them probably don't make sense for this repository, since they either enable things we probably don't want, or are aimed at repositories where many people are trying to coordinate and enforce policies together. We use some of them in my day job, where I find it useful, but probably not here in this small community.
