The "Verify database" has been known to give false reports. One option that
can cause these false reports is a corrupted preference. Try deleting this
preference file in your User's --> Library Preferences:

com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist

Other options to check:

1) Bad RAM.
2) Being low on disk space. To check your disk space, use the Activity
Monitor. Click on Disk Usage in the bottom menu bar and select the volume
where you have Office installed. You can also use Disk Utility to see
detailed information about a disk or volume.

To learn more, open Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities folder and
refer to Disk Utility Help.

When you have a bad message, you need to use the old method of
troubleshooting preferences in OS9. Divide in half and test. Rinse and
repeat.

I was doing a recovery on a database and found corruption in the sent items
folder. It took over 30 tries to narrow down the problem message. Each time
I would try to export as MBOX file, Entourage would crash as well as the
Finder. In the end it was one message. I could open it in Entourage and copy
the contents. When I tried to drag it to the desktop, it's icon wasn't
correct and the file would not open nor would it allow me to delete it. In
the end I put it in a folder and deleted it. That was one bad message.

Hope this helps!
