Sync Services have been a huge sore spot for users. See this article for some tips:

(You might only want to sync contacts occasionally, so leave events set to sync) Then manually toggle sync for the other item, turn off after syncing and leave only one set to sync. Sorry the news isn't better. I guess I'm lucky that I don't have a cell phone so Sync Services doesn't affect me.
