I've seen some strange issues when corruption is in tasks. I found that Paul Berkowitz's Export-Import scripts gave a better export than the .rge export. Paul's scripts also saves categories where they are not saved in the .rge file. It says the scripts don't work in Leopard, but they do. It's only the 'unlock all' script that does not work. You have to enter the code for each script, but that's not a biggie. It's also interesting to see what's in the task file when you use the script. I've found messages and calendar events inserted into the file. This was from a Time Machine recovery database.
