Thanks. For the record, this problem fixed itself --- I left one of the saved
searches open while I went downstairs to watch a film. When I returned the
search, and all the others, worked.
I don't have any explanation for why this would happen. In particular how to
explain why the search didn't work on a new user/database, but there you go.
It's all working now.

I've seen some strange issues when corruption is in tasks. I found that Paul
Berkowitz's Export-Import scripts gave a better export than the .rge export.
Paul's scripts also saves categories where they are not saved in the .rge
file.
It says the scripts don't work in Leopard, but they do. It's only the
'unlock all' script that does not work. You have to enter the code for each
script, but that's not a biggie.
It's also interesting to see what's in the task file when you use the
script. I've found messages and calendar events inserted into the file. This
was from a Time Machine recovery database.
