You can purge the Most Recently Used. That's not actually in the Address
Book itself. The MRU is used when addressing messages.

In the Address Book itself, you can add the column "Last Correspondence."
sort by this column and delete older emails.

Personally, I prefer using .rge to export contacts. This gets the categories
you have assigned. I have an Automator action that backs up my contacts once
a week as a .rge file automatically. These files are very small and it's
nice to have snapshots of just my contacts in addition to my Identity
backups.
