I just solved my own problem. Because I still had other messages in my InBox, I selected a known good message, then used Command+a to select all (including the bad message), then I deleted all which moved them to the Deleted Mail folder, and that worked. Then, I moved the good messages from the trash back to the InBox. Then, with only the one bad message remaining, I selected the Deleted Mail folder and used the contextual menu to empty it, and that finally got rid of the bad message. Whew....
