((( This posting contains a workaround )))

I did not receive a response to my 25-Nov-09 posting on how to
replace a defective or suspect Office 2009 Microsoft Database Utility;
nor did anyone indicate success in using the Time Machine "Restore"
option to replace the Entourage Database. I can only assume it will not
work.

I read Diane's excellent article on how to backup using SuperDuper.

l>

and leaned a few new (to me) tips; however, it is still not clear that
you can replace only the Entourage Database using SuperDuper and
have Entourage recognize the replaced Database. The SuperDuper
help file says drag copy but one (very bad) experience was Entourage
would not recognize a drag copied Database file.

The following is how I got around the problem of the Microsoft Database
Utility hanging and not finishing its job.

First, as a belt and suspenders action I used the OS X right-click
"Compress" option to zip my Entourage Database. This took a few minutes.
I then did a fresh SuperDuper backup. This gave me two RESTORE
options, if I messed up the picky Entourage Database file

I then ran the Microsoft Database Utility using the rebuild option. It did
its thing but failed to finish (again) in Step 5/5 again and I had to use
the OS X Force Quit to exit. Force Quit said "Microsoft Database Utility
(not responding)" that usually means an application hang.

I then went to my Office 2008 Identities folder and noted the Database
Utility did in fact create a new compacted database (Step 4); however, it
failed (Step 5) to make it the active database. I moved the active Database
to the trash can and changed the filename of the compacted database to
Database. I then had a hell-of-time trashing the Database until I changed
the filename to Old-Database. Once trashed, I opened Entourage and it
finally found and recognized and the compacted version and has been working
perfect!

All mail is present and accounted for and I did not have to use the
zipped backup version.

I still would like to know how to get the Microsoft Database Utility to
FINISH (Step 5 of 5) the job.

Thanks for reading this way too long discussion.
