Have you actually been able to use one of your drag and drop
backups?  The reason I ask is that I was doing the same thing
then ran into problem and could not get Entourage to recognize
my saved backup Database.

I think there is a similar issue with a Database restored from
a Time Machine.  

I have not seen a success story on restoring from the TM
