You must have missed something when you set up the SMTP server. Triple check 
the details there.
It could also be that your ISP is blocking external SMTP servers and requires 
that you use his SMTP instead. That might be something worth checking (though 
usually Google's SMTP is not blocked since it uses a special port over SSL).
By the way, you know you can use gMail through IMAP instead of POP, right?
