Recently, seemingly out of nowhere, Entourage returns a 17900 error
message, indicating an invalid or missing password or user ID when I¹ve got
my password saved in the account settings. Then, when I¹ll save it again,
and make sure it¹s in my keychain, I can open the settings, and there¹s
nothing there. Then, I will also get a 5.7.8 error stating that
³authentication failed...² and instructions regarding there may be a problem
with the username/password or my security set-up. I¹ve changed nothing, but
those show up with no warning.

Now, it seems to alternate between the missing password and the
authenticaition. Sometimes it takes the password in the dialog box that
shows up, sometimes it doesn¹t. Sometimes it helps to check the ³Save in
MacOS keychain² box, sometimes not. Sometimes it disappears from the
account settings, sometimes it¹s still there, or re-entering it there works.

I¹ve just done searches for both error messages on the Help Page, to no
avail. Found some of the threads on Mactopia, but nothing close enough to
what I¹m experiencing.

My main email provider is Compuserve (classic!), now part of AOL‹I¹m going
for the world¹s longest-held email address, as I¹ve had this one since
before the Internet (gasp, horrors!). It¹s a POP mailbox, accessed through
my BellSouth/AT&T DSL service.

I¹m working with a Late 2008 MacBook Pro (2.4GHz), running 10.6.2 and E¹rage
12.2.3‹not the Exchange edition.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Blessings,
Fred
