When you get a problem like this, restart is your first option.

Rebuilding can cause problems. Never rebuild unless you are having problems.

Using Disk Utility from the disk to verify boot volume is required, but to
repair permission don't do this from the disk but from Disk Utility in
applications.

Common report.

You might be able to tell from the Console crash logs, but all this sounds
like the system had a hissy fit and restart fixed it.

Running the latest Apple combo over your install might not fix anything but
it's often worthwhile to repair issues with the base system files.

Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo)

If journaling is turned on for a disk, Mac OS X maintains a continuous
record of changes made to files on the disk. If your computer stops because
of a power failure or some other issue, Mac OS X uses the journal to recover
the disk to the last acceptable state before it stopped.

I don't have it turned on and don't really have an opinion on this option.
Others in the group might be able to offer insights on whether this is
useful.

Sounds like it.
