Doug, The fact that you are stuck on MAU 2.1.1 and the MAU recognizes that
you need to update indicates something is possibly with your file. Do a
Get Info and check Permissions.

 Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0

My file shows:

System - Read & Write
Admin - Read & Write
Everyone - Read only

You might have to do a re-install to fix, but try these options first:

1) download MAU 2.1.1 again. Remove your copy and reinstall:

In case the above link does not work:

2) You might be able to force Office to download SP1 again by removing
receipts. Check in both these places:

A) Remove all office2008...pkg receipts in /Library/Receipts

B) If you are running Snow Leopard, remove the com.microsoft....plist
files in this invisible folder:

    In the Finder toolbar under Go, paste in this path:
        /private/var/db/receipts

If you can download and run SP1, check the MAU to be sure it is updated to
version 2.2.0 after updating to 12.1.0 (SP1).

See my next post on Basics on Microsoft AutoUpdater for more info.

Steps to re-install Office aren't so bad since they combined updaters.

Original DVDs of Office come with the installed version 12.0.0.
* Install 12.1.0 SP1
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/mactopia_dl.html#sp1>
* Install 12.2.5
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/mactopia_dl.html#updater_12_2_5>

Newer shipping DVDs will install 12.1.0 (SP1) or 12.2.0 (SP2)
* Install 12.2.5 combo
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/mactopia_dl.html#updater_12_2_5>

Be sure to follow the steps here:

Hope this helps!
