Even if we assume that the team is solely comprised of fresh-faced kids
straight out of college, we can't assume that it means that they've never
done something similar to your example.  I'd be happy to introduce you to
the thesis from my first undergrad degree, which weighed in at over 200
pages.  There's a surprising degree of overlap in many college student
scenarios and what we at Microsoft refer to as "information worker"
scenarios: working together on large documents, sending lots of emails,
tracking things in Excel, making huge PowerPoint decks.

Aside from that, I reject the premise that one has to have created a 500+
page Word document to be a great Word developer (or tester, or program
manager).  I'd hate for a member of the application team to assume that
their 500+ page document is representative of anything more than a whole
lot of hard work on their part.  It's incumbent on the team to have an
open mind about what people do with our applications, to never assume that
their own usage is representative, and to be able and willing to consume
the user research that comes from my team.  It's my team's job to
effectively represent the user to the application teams and to help them
understand our applications from our users' myriad (and often conflicting)
points of view.

It's clear that you strongly dislike the Ribbon in Word for Windows, but
there are many others (including people who are highly experienced with
previous versions of the applications) who don't share your opinion.  I
just searched on Twitter for "ribbon mac", and aside from all of the
retweets of our video, these are the two with original content:
* am i more excited for Outlook, the ribbon or that the video uses a One
Republic song?
* nice to see the ribbon make it, and Outlook!
I realise that your experience with the Ribbon in Office for Windows has
left you with a bad taste in your mouth, but I ask you to set aside your
preconceptions and give us a fair chance when Office 2011 reaches store
shelves later this year.

To answer a question that came later: users of Entourage 2008 will be able
to import their Identity file into Outlook 2011.  You might want to check
out the Outlook tag in my blog for more details about what's coming in
Outlook (I've addressed this question there already):

We'll be sharing more details about Office:Mac 2011 in the coming days.
 Stay tuned. :D

Regards,
Nadyne.
