Sorry, I jusy noticed from your dmesg that you have an Athlon64 processor.
It is possible to do either with it.

It isn't necessary to build a whole new kernel - this is just a kernel module 
which would work as long as you have the kernel tree from which your running 
kernel was built around. The patch I did was mainly to deal with changes with 
kernel headers around 2.6.27. And granted, I know the vendor driver doesn't 
quit work with 64-bit kernel.

You problem seems to be slightly different/newer hardware.
