Many Buddhists I've met from SE-Asia and SriLanka/Ceylon sit up and take notice 
when I mention that I'm Mahayana, and that I hold Zen beliefs. Their 
reaction(which is not exactly positive most of the time) never ceases to amuse 
me. I think that the Chinese also get wary when I tell them that I'm somewhat 
Japanese/Samurai-influenced in my beliefs

I will also extend it to say that most (or at least a large number of) 
Buddhists do not consider Zen Buddhism as a ligitimate expression of Buddhism 
and consider it cult. I say this after talking with numerous Buddhists 
(including Buddhist clergy) in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam.
