Yep, I know what you mean. That's why I started a new sangha here and left the
ZDS after 24 years.

Most of the teaching is Sheng Yen's style, but not all.

No mimicking, just standing on his shoulders, but especially using the
shoulders he's given us.

He required before his death that all affiliate centers be able to hold
Retreat, too, and not just teach meditation and the physical methods in regular
or daily sits. So, along with some 20 other of his long-time disciples from
all parts, I am in training in NYC and Taiwan to better hold retreats. Each of
us has been on 20 or more retreats during the decades with shifu and has
practiced with him for over 25 years, but there are some details that even an
old-timer does not see, just because teachers are so very good at what they do.
These are the details we're being drilled in.

I'd say, too, that keeping the group of us non-transmitted dharma teachers
close is also good for collegiality and communication, since usually we are
geographically scattered. The trainings are led by Sheng Yen's monastic dharma
heirs, whom we all know and love from much connection with each other during
many years of our all being Sheng Yen's disciples together, and members of his
sangha, whether monastic or lay.

Sheng Yen was heir to both Soto and Rinzai, so we get hit from both sides with
the best of each, and all of us have been so hit for decades. '-)

With Cheers, and in appreciation of kinhin,
